Deadlines

This week my deadline with Veteran’s Voices passed and it’s been an incredible feeling participating in such an amazing project. The release day is Memorial Day 2016 and it got me thinking about what Memorial Day usually means to me.

I’ve been a part of the Women’s Auxiliary at the American Legion post near me for a number of years now. There are some amazing women who go above and beyond every single day at this club. We host a number of dinners every year, as well as celebrations of life on Veteran’s Day and Memorial Day. I could gush on and on about these extraordinary women who devote countless hours to bettering the community but they know how amazing they are.

Part of my job was listening to the interviews that one of the primary authors and photographers recorded. I would sit for hours and listen to the amazing stories of heroic men and women. Sometimes heroism was bread out of fear for others, these men and women rise to the occasion, fear be damned. Sometimes heroism wasn’t even a thought as death was knocking on the door calling for a name. One of the stories was about a woman who saved an entire troop by Macgyvering her ass off. Impressive doesn’t begin to explain the incredible things they’ve done. I’m simply thankful to be let into their thoughts and lives for a short time.
