Let it be said, Becky Albertalli has set the new standard of amazing books for 2018. I started SIMON vs. THE HOMO SAPIENS AGENDA and couldn’t put it down. Finished day two and am tempted to just read it again. Instead I googled Becky Albertalli and found other books by her and bought them. But still, the temptation is there.
Sixteen-year-old and not-so-openly gay Simon Spier prefers to save his drama for the school musical. But when an email falls into the wrong hands, his secret is at risk of being thrust into the spotlight. Now Simon is actually being blackmailed: if he doesn’t play wingman for class clown Martin, his sexual identity will become everyone’s business. Worse, the privacy of Blue, the pen name of the boy he’s been emailing, will be compromised.
With some messy dynamics emerging in his once tight-knit group of friends, and his email correspondence with Blue growing more flirtatious every day, Simon’s junior year has suddenly gotten all kinds of complicated. Now, change-averse Simon has to find a way to step out of his comfort zone before he’s pushed out—without alienating his friends, compromising himself, or fumbling a shot at happiness with the most confusing, adorable guy he’s never met.
There are a lot of things I want to say about this book. But first it should be pointed out that the author is female, i.e. not a gay teenage boy but reading this, you wouldn’t know it. In fact, I remember when reading I’m like halfway through and I had to look at the cover to find the authors name. I thought I’d remembered it being written by a woman, but then needed to double check because I was no longer confident.
This book is really about falling in love with someone from the inside out. Something a lot of people can relate to. Something beautiful, nerve wracking, and so much more. I still feel like I’m ridding a happy cloud of awesome from Simon. I cried happy tears finishing this book. So many many feelings and I really just want everyone I know to read this so we can talk about it and nerd out to how amazing it is. That is my goal this year. To see how many people can read this book.
LOVE IT
